Food Insecurity Among Families In The Philippines Amid the Covid-19 Pandemic

Food and Nutrition Research Institute conducted the survey from November to December 2020, which covered 5,717 households in provinces to check the impact of Covid 19. Some 62.1% of Filipino households experienced moderate to severe food insecurity in 2020 amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Rapid Nutrition Assessment Survey (RNAS) conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI).

Food insecurity is the state where people lack regular access to enough safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development and an active and healthy lifestyle. This is due to the unavailability of food and/ lack of resources to obtain food.

The financial structure of the Philippines has shaken hard to already an impoverished country in many different levels of life. And it continues to place a hardship on the lives of those who were already suffering before the pandemic even hit the country.

According to a survey, this is how the Filipinos cope with ongoing battles to survive from day-to-day family operations. Over 71% purchased food on credit with high interest, 67% borrowed food from family, neighbors, and friends. 31% bartered food, meaning exchanged services for food, and 22% adults reduced amount of food intake so the children can have more to eat.

Mary Ann and I have been truly grateful for the support from just a few people back home in the United States that have given us the opportunity for us to share the love by giving rice and words of encouragement to families within our local area. Make sure you take a look at the pictures we have taken and this will give you a feel of the gratitude of thanks that come from many when they are receiving their share of rice. Again thanks so much for your prayers and ongoing support! We could not have done this type of outreach without your support and the power of God’s favor over us.
